Cashman grew up in Washingtonville, New York, and was born in Rockville Centre, New York. As the middle of five siblings born to John Cashman and Nancy, he was nurtured in an Irish Catholic home. Before beginning high school, he attended a summer camp run by Bucky Dent and became a baseball aficionado.
He grew up as a Los Angeles Dodgers fan. With the aid of former Dodger Ralph Branca, a family acquaintance, he worked as a batboy for the Dodgers during spring training in 1982 while visiting his grandmother in Florida.
