He was born Brett Michael Kavanaugh, in Washington, D.C, to Attorney Everett Edward Kavanaugh, and Martha Gamble, who was a history teacher and later became a judge at Maryland Circuit Court in Montgomery from 1995 to 2001. Both sides of his family are of Irish Catholic descent, and he was brought up in Bethesda, Maryland.

Brett attended Georgetown Preparatory School, which was a Jesuit boys’ college prep school. He was the captain of the school’s basketball team as well as a member of the football team. At the school, some of his classmates were Senator Richard Madaleno and Judge Mark. He graduated from the school in 1993 and then went to Yale University.
