Bones is an American crime procedural comedy-drama television series that was developed by Hart Hanson for Fox. It aired 246 episodes over twelve seasons after premiering on September 13, 2005. The series is based on forensic anthropology and archaeology, as each chapter focuses on an FBI case file concerning the mystery behind human remains brought by FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth to the forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance “Bones” Brennan. Furthermore, it also illustrated the personal lives of the characters. The members of the main cast include Michaela Conlin, T. J. Thyne, John Francis Daley, Eric Millegan, Tamara Taylor, Jonathan Adams, and John Boyd.

The series is based on the life and novels of Kathy Reichs, a forensic anthropologist. At the same time, its title character, Temperance Brennan, is named after the protagonist of Reichs’ crime novel series. Dr. Brennan writes successful mystery novels featuring a fictional forensic anthropologist, Kathy Reichs, in the Bones universe.

Bones is the longest-running one-hour drama series produced by 20th Century Fox Television.

The series, On February 25, 2016, was renewed for the final season, consisting of twelve episodes that premiered on January 3, 2017.

Inception

The idea of Bones was developed during the latter part of the pitching season of 2004. It was after 20th Century Fox approached Hart Hanson with an idea for a forensics show. Hanson met with executive producer Barry Josephson, who had acquired the rights to produce a documentary on the forensic anthropologist and author Kathy Reichs. After having an intensive meeting with Josephson about the show, Hanson wrote the pilot episode.

The writers continuously involve Reichs in the process of producing the episodes’ storylines as the show is based on her works.

Hanson decided to infuse the show with as much dark humor and character development as possible to make Bones unique amid the numerous procedural dramas that already populated network television like the Law & Order and CSI franchises. “Angelatron,” was the other element conceived for the show. It was a holographic projector that provided a way to replace the flashbacks used by other procedural shows. In addition to their expositional purposes, their unique holographic images brought a unique visual style to the appearance that the producers were looking for

Evolution

David Boreanaz was the first actor to be cast in Bones as most of the actors who had auditioned for the role of Seeley Booth were described as pretty boy waifs.

Before production began on the Bones pilot, Emily Deschanel was cast in the role of Temperance Brennan. She was recommended by film Glory Road’s producer Jerry Bruckheimer after she finished her role in the film. Deschanel’s assertiveness impressed Hart Hanson at her audition.

Zack Addy (Eric Millegan) was replaced by Wendell Bray (Michael Grant Terry), Colin Fisher (Joel Moore), Arastoo Vaziri (Pej Vahdat), Vincent Nigel-Murray (Ryan Cartwright), Clark Edison (Eugene Byrd) and Daisy Wick (Carla Gallo) at the beginning of season four.

Even though the show is mainly set in Washington, D.C., most of Bones is filmed in Los Angeles, California. The external shots are captured at the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles and the Wallis Annenberg Building at the University of Southern California.

The soundtrack album titled Bones, produced by Maria Alonte McCoy and Billy Gottlieb, was released in 2008 with a total of 13 songs.
