Bon Iver
Bon Iver is an indie-folk band from America. The group was founded in 2006 by Justin Vernon. The band released their debut album titled “For Emma, Forever Ago” in 2007. The majority of the collection was recorded in an isolated cabin in Wisconsin. They have released a total of four albums. Their latest album was released in 2019. The name “Bon Iver” is derived from the French word bon hiver, which means good winter. Currently, the band has seven members.
Inception
Justin Vernon was going through a rough time in 2006. His band, DeYarmond Edison, broke up, his relationship with his girlfriend ended, and he suffered from mononucleosis hepatitis. He was very depressed with all this, so he left Raleigh, North Carolina, and went back to Wisconsin.
He spent the winter in his father’s cabin. While he was living there, the “Bon Iver” moniker entered his mind. He was very ill during this time, as he was suffering from mononucleosis. He was watching a TV series Northern Exposure where in one episode, a group of citizens from Alaska wished each other bon hiver. He then came up with the name Bon Iver and formed the band with Mike Noyce, Sean Carey, and Matthew McCaughan.
Evolution
To track the evolution of Bon Iver’s music is very tough. Their first album, “For Emma, Forever Ago,” is very vulnerable. Its like a little peek into Justin Vernon’s thoughts. The instruments sound like they were recorded in a church. The album starts with “Flume,” a song that creates a surreal stratosphere. The last song of the album is “Re: Stacks,” and the whole album is like a story.
At the end of the song, we can hear him putting his guitar back, and then there is a long silence. Their next major release came in 2011 with their self-titled album. The album has ten songs and has a much heavier sound than their first album. “22, A Million” and “i, i” are saliently different from “For Emma, Forever Ago.” The level of vulnerability and the level of complexity in music will shock you. There is no standout track from “22, A Million” because every song emotes something different.
“i, i” starts with jarring chords and background noise for the first 30 seconds. The next track, “I,” has a rhythm that feels like ocean waves at first. Something, Bon Iver has always done well is maneuver through songs seamlessly. Its best example can be seen in “i, i.”

Bon Iver has won awards for their second studio album, “Bon Iver.” They have won two Grammy Awards from eight nominations.
