Corker was born in Orangeburg, South Carolina, on 24 August 1952, his parents Jean J. and Robert Phillips “Phil” Corker. His great-great-grandfather was U.S. Congressman, and his name is Stephen A. Corker. When Corker was eleven, his family moved to Tennessee.

In 1970 Corker graduated from Chattanooga High School, and in 1974, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Management from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
