Robert William Barker was born on December 12, 1923, in Darrington, Washington, to his parents Matilda (“Tillie”) Valandra and Byron John Barker. He spent most of his life in South Dakota.
He completed his schooling in 1941 from Central High School in Springfield, Missouri. He has earned his bachelor’s degree in economics from Drury University. During World War II, he worked as a fighter pilot in the United States Navy. In 1979, he became a vegetarian.
