Early Life & Biography

Bjarke Ingels was born on 2 October 1974 to an engineer father, and his mother was a dentist. During his childhood, Bjarke wanted to be a cartoonist after growing up. He started studying architecture in the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts back in the year 1993, with hopes that the architecture would help him improve his skills in drawing.

After some years, Bjarke developed an interest in architecture and continued with his education at the Escola Tecnica Superior d’Arquitectura, situated in Barcelona. Bjarke later returned to Copenhagen back in the year 1999 to get his diploma. While he was a third-year student at the university, Bjarke set up his first practice and emerged the winner in his first challenge.

Bjarke Ingels made his official career debut from the year 1998, from which he operated at Rem Koolhaas, working at the Office for Metropolitan Architecture, situated in Rotterdam. Back in the year 2001, Bjarke relocated to Copenhagen, intending to set up the architectural practice PLOT alongside OMA colleague Julien de Smedt from Belgium. Inspired by the concept of Corbusier, Bjarke designed the two residential houses having the shape of letters V and M when observed from the sky. The M House having 95 units came into completion back in the year 2004 with the other one having letter V shape with 114 units completing in 2005. The design puts a well-built emphasis on daylight, views, and privacy.

Following the disbanding of PLOT at the end of 2005, Bjarke founded the Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG). It was his company, and it grew up to 400 staff by the year 2016. BIG then started working on the 25 meter high Mountain Dwellings on the two houses with V and M shapes.

Back in the year 2006, Bjarke Ingels founded his private owned syndicate BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group). The company is one of the most advanced studios in the world, working within the development, urbanism, research, and architecture fields.
