Born on 23 August 1958, in Knoxville, Tennessee, Haslam was the third child of Jim Haslam and his wife, Cynthia (Allen), the founder of Pilot Corporation, the parent company of the convenience store and. Jim Haslam, his father, was a Republican Party fundraiser and University of Tennessee sponsor and trustee for several years.
Haslam schooled at the Webb School of Knoxville, where he was active in a Christian group, Young Life. Later, in 1980, Haslam proceeded to Emory University, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in history. He is a member of the Beta Sigma chapter of the Sigma Chi International Fraternity.
