Ben stated that Nirvana was his biggest influence on music as he learned to play the guitar while listening to Nirvana`s music. At the age of 21, Benjamin moved to Wilkes-Barre, where he earned a living from doing cover songs alongside some of his songs. Benjamin, together with Aaron Fink, started a band, Breaking Benjamin, in 1998.

Ben then moved to Pennsylvania and started another band together with Jeremy Hummel, a drummer, which they named  Plan 9.  Jason Davoli played bass, and Benjamin did both the vocals and electric solo guitar while Jeremy played the drum. Ben then renamed the band, and he actually called it Breaking Benjamin. Ben has composed close to six songs with the band. Some of the songs made a big hit in the United States.

Burnley has made collaborations with many other artists outside the Breaking Benjamin band.  He has done live songs with bands such as Disturbed, Evans Blue, and Three Days Grace. Artists such as Adam Gontier and  Red have made collaborations with Ben.

Benjamin co-wrote Madam Adam and Red. They wrote songs such as Forgotten and Shadows, respectively. Adam Gontier has done a song with Benjamin, The End of the Day, which is yet to be released.
