Zobrist was born on the 26th of May 1981, in Eureka, Illinois to Cynthia and Tom Zobrist. His father was a senior pastor of Liberty Bible Church in Eureka. Ben grew up a solid St. Louis Cardinals fan.

Zobrist started playing baseball at the tender age of 8. Together with his friends, they built a wiffle ball field behind his house. He attended Eureka High School and graduated in 1999. At the end of his time in high school, Zobrist thought that his life of playing baseball was over because no scout or recruiter approached him.

He planned to attend the Calvary Bible College in Kansas City, Missouri but was encouraged by his coach to spend $50 to participate in an annual summer event which showcased seniors in Peoria, Illinois. After going to the event, he was offered to play college baseball at Olivet Nazarene University. He transferred to the Dallas Baptist University for his senior year where he played shortstop.

Career

Zobrist started off playing for the Twin City Stars of the Central Illinois Collegiate League in 2002 and then in Wausau, Wisconsin for Wisconsin Woodchucks of the Summer Collegiate Northwoods League in 2003. In the 2004 MLB draft, Ben was drafted by the Houston Astros as a shortstop in the sixth round. In 2006, he was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays on July 12th, 2006, where he also played as a shortstop.

In 2006 and 2007, Ben struggled with swinging the bat but after paying a visit to a batting coach, Zobrist’s game improved immensely which was evident in 2008.

On January 10th, 2015, Zobrist was traded to the Oakland Athletics together with his teammate, Yunel Escobar. On the opening day of the Athletics, he hit a two-run home run in his first at-bat. Unfortunately, he suffered an injury on his left knee that kept him out for 4-6 weeks.

He was traded to the Kansas City Royals in October 2015 where he played 59 games in the regular season. He joined the Chicago Cubs in December of that year where he was reunited with his former manager at the Tampa Bay Rays, Joe Maddon.

Ben officially retired on the 6th of March, 2020.
