Ben Folds was born Benjamin Scott Folds on the 12^th of September in 1966. He hails from Winston-Salem, North Carolina. At the age of 9, his interest in piano was realized by his father, who was a carpenter. And since he could not afford a piano, he got involved in barter trade with one of his customers who were unable to pay him for his services.

His interest at this time was in Billy Joel’s and Elton John’s songs that were played on AM radio and were able to learn them by ear. He attended Richard J. Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem, and he was a member of several bands as the bassist, drummer, or pianist.

After graduating from high school, Folds joined the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music after receiving a full percussion scholarship.
