Career

During the summer of 2007, while still in college, 21-year-old McChord began building a data recovery and backup device in his father’s office basement. He recalls having an idea “to construct a mass device that copied data to cloud servers, and I felt I could do it cheaper than anything on the market.”

With Linksys components, Lego pieces, hot glue, a soldering iron, and his own software, he created his first device. McChord went on to obtain a number more patents. His products take frequent photographs of a client’s server content, encrypt the data, and send it to backup servers, enabling for speedy server reboots if the client’s server is hacked or crashes.

In 2007, he became the first CEO of the firm Datto, which would sell the device, and the product would enter the market in early 2008. His first clients came from articles on blogs like Engadget and Gizmodo. Before continuing to create additional models, he built a Linux-compatible backup device to sell to a small number of resellers.

McChord turned rejected a $100 million acquisition offer from an undisclosed security business in early 2013. Datto’s intention to dissolve the company and lay off staff irritated McChord, who was the company’s only shareholder at the time. Instead, McChord acquired $25 million in expansion funding from General Catalyst Partners that autumn, with Paul Sagan and Steve Herrod joining the Datto board of directors as part of the deal. Backupify, a Massachusetts-based firm that “backs up data in cloud programs such as Salesforce and Google Apps,” was bought by McChord in December 2014.

Following an FBI request and consent from the Hillary Clinton campaign, McChord reportedly gave over up to 17,448 Clinton emails from Datto’s servers, as well as hardware, to the FBI in September 2015. In November 2015, Datto secured $75 million in investment from Technology Crossover Ventures, with McChord stating that the cash will be used to grow globally.
