Early Life & Biography
AJ Foyt was born Anthony Joseph Foyt on the 16th of January in 1935. He is the son of Emma Evelyn Monk Foyt and Anthony (Tony) Foyt Sr., who was an auto-mechanic. His father also owned midget race cars, but he only raced as a hobby and not a career. He passed on his passion for race cars to his son AJ by building him a toy racer using a lawnmower engine when he was only five years of age.
He studied at Pershing and Hamilton middle schools, and for his high school studies, he went to St. Thomas and San Jacinto Catholic Schools. However, he dropped out of high school and instead chose to be an auto-mechanic just as his father. He also spent much of his time on racing. After he received a driving license, he purchased an Oldsmobile to practically exercise the mechanic skills he had acquired working in his father’s car. He then started street racing with it before his father discovered his gifting and gave him a midget racing car.
Although AJ has been in public for many years, he has managed to maintain a secretive personal life, especially when it comes to his wife and kids. Foyt began his racing career in 1953 when he was 18 years old. His first car was owned and maintained by his father. He started his USAC career using a Midget car and participated in the 1956 Night before the 500. The event was held in Anderson, Indiana. He celebrated his first midget car win at a 100 lap event that was held in Kansas City in 1957. He was 7th in the season point standings. He continued winning in many other midget car races until it became his lifestyle.
After the win, he got into Sprint car career at the age of 21 in 1956. His first car was a Las Vaughn Offy and was in the International Motor Contest Association. On 24th August 1956, in Minnesota, State FairAJ was able to outqualify a field of 42 drivers. The following day, he recorded his first sprint car race win.
AJ felt it was time to start his championship car career, which he did. In 1961 he recorded his first win in the Indianapolis 500 race. He raced in every season of the championship car race from 1957 to 1992.
