Aerosmith is a rock band from America which was formed in Boston, Massachusetts. The band which was formed way back in 1970 is made up of five members, namely Steven Tyler, Tom Hamilton, Brad Whitford, Joe Perry, and Joey Kramer. The style of the band is mainly blues-based hard rock, which has come to incorporate some elements of rhythm and blues, heavy metal as well as pop-rock.

Hamilton and Perry were in another band together called the Jam Band, and after meeting with Tyler Kramer and Ray Tabano, they formed Aerosmith in 1970. After staying in the band for only one year, Tabano was replaced by Whitford. In 1972 the band was signed to Columbia Records. It was during this time that the band released several golds and platinum albums like Get Your Wings, Toys in the Attic, Rocks, Night in the Ruts, and Draw the Line. The band, which has been in the entertainment industry since 1970, has released a total of 15 studio albums to date.

Inception

Before the formation of the band Aerosmith, Steven Tyler had formed his own band in 1964 called the Strangers, which was later renamed to Chain Reaction, and it was based in New York. On the other hand, Perry and Hamilton also had a band called Jam Band, and after moving to Massachusetts in 1969 and meeting Joey Kramer, they started holding gigs.

Chain Reaction and the Jam Band started playing at the same gigs in 1970, and that same year, the two bands combined and the band Aerosmith were formed. The band played their very first gig on 6 November 1970 at Nipmuc Regional High School in Massachusetts. In 1971 the band started to garner a local following as they started doing live shows.

The band signed a deal with Columbia Records in 1972 for $125,000, and the following year, they released their debut album titled Aerosmith. The album sold 2 million copies, and it was certified gold, and after a decade, it was certified double platinum.

The second album that the band released was titled Get Your wings, released in 1974, and it was produced by Jack Douglas. This was the first of the string of albums by the same producer that was certified multi-platinum. Other albums that followed are Toys in the Attic, Rocks, and Draw a Line, among others.

Evolution

The members of Aerosmith were heavily in drug use, and this greatly affected the group, and it eventually started to slow down. In July 1979, there arose a dispute between Perry and Hamilton, and this led to Perry leaving the group, taking all the music he had written with him. Whitford left the band in 1981, and he embarked on a solo career. In 1984 the band members met at a theatre in Boston, and they decided to reunite.

The band embarked on a reunion tour in 1984, which was called Back in the Saddle Tour. Their first album after the reunion was titled Done with Mirrors, and although it was not very well received, it was certified gold. All this time, the band was holding regular tours, and they had become a concert attraction. Despite all this success, the drug problem was still getting on their way, and in 1986 Tyler went for a rehabilitation program. He was not the only one as the other band members also completed their programs in the following couple of years.

In 1987 the band released Permanent Vacation, which sold more than 5 million copies in the United States and also became a major hit. This was the very first album that the band did while sober. From there, the band became more and more serious, and their music career blossomed worldwide. They held several tours and also performed in various places on different occasions. To date, the band is still together, and there are even rumors of a new album and a farewell tour. The band remains one of the most successful bands of all time.

Awards & Achievements

Although the band was formed in 1970, it only started winning awards in the 1980s and 1990s. They won the Soul Train Music Award in 1987. They have also won several Grammy Awards, 10 MTV Video Music Awards, 3 Viewer’s Choice Award, 2 VMAs Awards, 6 American Music Awards, 4 Billboard Music Awards, and 16 Boston Music Awards.
