His father had a Jewish descent while his mother, a Catholic, had an Irish descent. His father was a very successful entrepreneur and philanthropist. His mother died in 2008 while his father died in 2017. Stephen had two other siblings, him being the youngest. His elder sister, Jane, is an attorney and activist while his brother David served as CEO at the company his father had founded.

Stephen attended his elementary school in Jamaica Estates. He later attended George Ryan Junior High School for his middle school and later George School for high school education.
