Thomas Sowell was born on 30 June 1930, in a family of black sharecroppers in North Carolina, America. Sowell grew up in Harlem and attended New York’s elite Stuyvesant High School for his studies. Sowell was inducted into the Marine Corps after working in a variety of menial positions and became a service photographer.
He then briefly studied at Howard University, Washington. He went to Harvard, finally graduating at the age of 28 with a magna cum laude. Sowell was his household’s first member to walk past sixth grade. Sowell graduated from the University of Chicago in 1968 with a Master’s Degree at Columbia and later a PhD in economics.
