Gunn was born in St. Louis, Missouri, to parents James F. Gunn and Leota Gunn. His father was an attorney. Gunn is of Irish and Jewish heritage and has five siblings. Gunn at the age of 12, he began making 8 mm zombie films with his brothers in the woods near their home.
Gunn had gone to the Jesuit St. Louis University High School from where he graduated in 1984. He then got a degree in Bachelor of Arts from Saint Louis University.
