His full names are Charles Ernest Grassley, born in New Hartford, Iowa, on 17 September 1933. His parents Louis Arthur Grassley and Ruth Grassley owned a farm in Iowa, and that is where he was brought up. He enrolled at Iowa Teachers College, graduating in 1955 with a B.A., and later in 1956, he got an M.A. from the same institution. In the 1950s, he farmed and also worked in factories within Iowa to make a living.
