Born on an Army base in Eatontown, New Jersey, Herman Edwards was the son of a World War II veteran and a German lady, Martha. In 1972 and 1974, he played collegiate football at the University of California, in 1973 at Monterey Peninsula Junior College, and 1975 at San Diego State University (SDSU).

Edwards spent nine seasons in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles, from 1977 to 1985 – In Super Bowl XV, he was a member of the squad that won the title. His 33 career interceptions are one shy of breaking the team record.
Edwards went on to play briefly with the Los Angeles Rams and Atlanta Falcons before retiring in 1986. In the dying seconds of a game versus the New York Giants at the Meadowlands on the 19th of November, 1978, the pinnacle of Edwards’ playing career happened.

Edwards’ first regular-season game as a head coach with the Kansas City Chiefs ended in a 23–10 home loss. Herm Edwards led constant losses with the Kansas City Chiefs team.
