Rebecca Lobo was born on 6 October 1973 in Hartford, Connecticut, to Ruth Ann and Dennis Joseph Lobo. She has two siblings, a brother Jason and a sister Rachel who both also played college basketball. She was raised in Southwick, where her parents worked as professional teachers. Lobo’s father was also a field and track and a basketball coach.

At an early age, Lobo showed great interest in basketball, where she even wrote a letter to Arnold Auerbach, the then Bolton Celtic president, that she would be the first girl on his team. She wrote him this letter while she was still in third grade. Before a girls’ basketball team formed in her community, Lobo played in the boy’s team as a starter. She later went for her high school studies at Southwick-Tolland Regional High School, where she played for the school team. While still in high school, she held a Scoring record on 2740 points.

Personal Life

In 2001, Rebecca met Steve Rushin in a Manhattan bar. Steve was a writer of the sports magazine Sports Illustration which he used the platform to shame the women basketball. She approached Steve only so that she would put him into his place, which she eventually did. She told him that the women basketball games had over 15000 fans attending, and this showed that Steve had never gone to any women basketball game.

Out of embarrassment, Steve agreed he had never gone to a women basketball game, and Lobo invited him to one of her games. They later started dating and eventually married in 2003 at a basketball hall of fame in Springfield. The couple has four children together and currently living with her family in Granby.

After she graduated from high school, she attended the University of Connecticut, which she chose due to its academic excellence.

In college, she joined the college team The Huskies, which she led to winning the 1995 National championship. The team kept a 35-0 unbeaten record. Her college career was so successful as she was named National player of the year in 1995. Lobo the would win The Wade trophy, Honda Sports Award, The AP player of the year award, and the USBWA player of the year. She was the first player to be named All American for both her academics and basketball.

In 1992, she got chosen to play in the USA under18 team, which she participated in Mexico later that year. She also participated in Brazil with the team, where they won a silver medal each. In 1995, Lobo joined the National Team, and she played in the 1996 Olympics, where the team won the gold medal.

The women National Basketball Association formed in 1997, and she got allocated to the New York Liberty during the league’s first allocation. In 1999, she suffered an injury that made her not participate in the WNBA All-star team. In 1996 Lobo and her mother published a book, The Home Team, which talked about her mother’s fight against breast cancer.
