Richard Channing Garfield was born on June 26, 1963, in Philadelphia. His father was an architect, and therefore he spent his childhood in different locations throughout the world.

When Garfield was twelve years old, his family finally settled in Oregon. His great-great-grandfather was the former U.S. President James A. Garfield, while his grand-uncle was the inventor of the paper clip. His nephew, Fay Jones, is also an established artist who illustrated one of the Magic cards for him.
