Richard Channing Garfield was born on June 26, 1963, in Philadelphia. His father was an architect, and therefore he spent his childhood in different locations throughout the world.
When Garfield was twelve years old, his family finally settled in Oregon. His great-great-grandfather was the former U.S. President James A. Garfield, while his grand-uncle was the inventor of the paper clip. His nephew, Fay Jones, is also an established artist who illustrated one of the Magic cards for him.

Richard Garfield started developing games from childhood, but he became a full-time game designer after completing his Ph.D. In 1985, he developed a board game called RoboRally and was finding it very difficult to get a publisher.
The game publishing company Wizards of the Coast expressed interest, but they wanted some modifications before releasing the game. They asked Garfield to create a game that was cheaper, portable, and even easy to carry around to conventions.
Within a week, he completed the game and sent it to the publishers for approval. Garfield combined the ideas of Cosmic Encounter-inspired card game called “Five Magics” and the existing game and invented the first trading card game, Magic: The Gathering, which was launched in 1993.
Garfield also began independently developing expansion packs. The following year, he joined Wizard of the Coast as their full-time game designer. He balanced the player experience with business needs and established a robust tournament system for the game.
