Dick Cavett was born in Gibbon, Nebraska. His mother, Erabel” Era” (nee Richards) and his father, Alva B Cavett were both teachers in Comstock, Gibbon and Grand Island. Alva A Cavett and Gertrude Pinsch were his grandparents from father’s side, and Rev R.R and Etta Mae Richards were his grandparents from mother’s side.
Dick Cavett attended kindergarten at Wasmer Elementary School. His schooling was done from Capitol, Prescott and Irving schools and Lincoln High School. His mother died when he was ten at the age of 36. His father remarried to a fellow teacher, namely, Dorcas Deland. In eighth grade, Cavett directed a live Saturday morning radio show and played the title role of The Winslow Boy.
After he completed his college, he got a job in Lincoln Country Club as a cabbie.

When Cavett was studying in Yale School of Drama, he met the love of his life, Caroline Nye McGoey also popular as Carrie Nye, a Resident of Greenwood, Mississippi, America. After the completion, their graduation both of them acted in a summer theatre on Williamstown, Massachusetts. The two tied the knots on 4 June 1964, in New York. They were married until the death of Caroline in 2006.
In 2010 in New Orleans, Louisiana, Dick Cavett married Martha Rogers. Rogers is an author by profession. Rogers and Cavett are living in Ridgefield, Connecticut.

During his early days, Cavett was struggling to find a job. He was doing various kinds of job. The only jobs he was able to get was at Time magazine of a copy boy. There he heard about The Tonight Show, and he also learned that Jack Paar, the current host at the time, was having trouble with his opening monologue. So Cavett wrote one out and headed to the NBC headquarters.
There he luckily found Paar and handed his over the jokes. Impressed by his sense of humour, Paar hired him as a talent Instructor at the show. It was from there Cavett went off to become the host of the show. After some encouragement from his friend, Woody Allen, he tried his hands at stand up comedy in 1964, performing at clubs in New York and around the Nation.
In 1968, Cavett received an offer from ABC to host his show. Initially named “The Morning show” it soon came to be known as “The Dick Cavett Show”. However, ABC thought the show was too smart for the audience and cancelled it in 1974.
